Old Reliable Coffee: Japan
This bookmark is easily dated to 1915 because of the calendar on the back. While the image of the woman is slightly exaggerated (to emphasize her Japanese heritage to white readers and coffee purchasers?), it is nevertheless a beautiful bookmark image. Submitted by Lauren Roberts.

Old Reliable Coffee: X-ray Card
It calls itself a "novelty," this x-ray card that actually has a piece of x-ray film embedded in it. (When I first received it I put it in some plastic to protect it, but when I wrote about it I was sufficiently horrified at the history of how the x-ray had been used to wonder if I should toss it. I asked an x-ray technician about it. He assured me that it was unlikely to be any problem. Nevertheless, I keep it in two layers of plastic and when it comes out I never touch the film itself.) I have tried to do as the directions indicate, but can't see anything. The film is likely too old and worn out. But it's a good example of how people for a long time viewed x-rays as magical and fun, almost like toys. Submitted by Lauren Roberts.

Alden Fruit Vinegar - February
This series of calendar bookmarks advertises Alden Fruit Vinegar and was distributed by E. Downie & Co., dealers in Staple & Fancy Groceries, Owatonna, MN. All in the series have whimsical scenes and probably date from the 1880s. Alden also issued other trade cards, some of which are in library collections. Submitted by Laine Farley

Whitehead and Hoag Poppy
Although technically not in a series, Whitehead and Hoag designs are plentiful and the flower designs share some common characteristics. The poppy design is a favorite and careful comparison shows that it also forms the basis of the pansy design. Submitted by Laine Farley

Prang - Welcome the coming, speed the parting year
Louis Prang issued many bookmarks commemorating holidays, especially Christmas and New Year's. These often featured flora and fauna. This bookmark dates from 1880. Submitted by Laine Farley

Bell and Conrad Coffee - Egypt
The design of this bookmark, one of a series of 12 "Children of the World", is very similar to the one issued by Old Reliable Coffee featuring a Japanse girl. The reverse has facts about Egypt and probably dates to around 1915. I have another in the series that has a boy from China. Submitted by Laine Farley
